GingerFruit
Six people, one garden

The Olé family

Say it “oh-lay.” They’re a Caribbean-American family with a juice store out front and a garden out back. Look closely at their hair: it grows into ginger petals and mango leaves. And every one of them wears the same carved leaf pendant, handed down through the family.

Ginger-O

Big sister, age 6

Ginger-O is first into every adventure and first to say what she thinks. She’s bold, quick and a little spicy, and she looks out for her little brother even when she’s teasing him.

“Zing!”
Her hair
Two big puffs of ginger-flower petals, parted down the middle
Loves
Watering the garden and dancing with ribbons

Mang-O

Little brother, age 5

Mang-O notices everything. He’s gentle, curious and sweet, and he’d happily spend the whole day finding out how one seed turns into a tree.

His word
“Sweet!”
His hair
Layered mango leaves, green at the part and gold through the crown
Loves
Picking the ripest mango and making leaf rubbings

Mom Olé

Runs the GingerFruit Store

Mom works the register at the family juice store and knows every customer by name. At home she’s the one braiding hair and shaking the maracas.

Loves
Patio music and decorating flower pots

Dad Olé

Built the store

Dad built the GingerFruit Store with his own hands and keeps it stocked. If something is broken, wobbly or needs a shelf, he’s already getting his toolbox.

His hair
Short crimson ginger petals, and a full beard
Loves
Drumming, fixing the little red wagon and teaching shoelaces

Grandma Olé

Keeper of the garden

Grandma keeps the family garden, the family recipes and the best stories. Her ginger-mango fruit salad is the reason everyone comes home hungry.

Grandpa Olé

Planted the garden

Grandpa planted the garden long ago and knows why it’s special. He teaches the children how seedlings grow, slowly and with patience.

Loves
Building planters and a porch dance with Grandma
